The concept for the Secret Chord & Timber Tower was a continuation of the Curious Artifact: Soundscape. The site is adjacent to an alleyway that is currently used frequently as a pedestrian path. In order to maintain the human scale and comfort level of the pedestrian, the building peels back on the West side to reveal a urban garden space. This move of peeling back ties in with the Curious Artifact’s rough bark being removed to reveal the delicate inner rings of the wood. The same is true in the Timber Tower, the gentle curve of the building mimics the round curves of tree rings, while a double skin facade reveals the delicate operable louvers within. The mixed-use residential & retail tower houses a luthier’s studio, workshop, and retail space, as well as residential apartments at all scales. The tower is constructed of Cross Laminated Timber and Glulam Beams & and is very sustainable.
